Sai Yat Ling - Week 4 : Sai the food critic

Soccer is a unique sport where two teams of 11 players try their very best to score a goal on an opposing team to win a match. This is my favorite sport and I think it plays a vital role in my identity. To me, it is something that I can do after a long day at school. It is something that I want to succeed in. And it is something that I feel passionate about. Eventually, I want to become a professional soccer player and I understand that it is a hard process.

It all started when I had the pleasure to watch Kylian Mbappe score against Australia in the first match of the world cup. In that moment, I was able to fully visualize and understand the beauty of the sport. The elite touch, control, and finishing that Mbappe displayed that day was something that overwhelmed my senses. From that day, I started my journey to becoming a professional soccer player. Each day since 7th grade I would go out to the field and put all my energy into getting better. It was exhausting. Sometimes I felt like giving up and taking it easy, but I realized that one day of slacking off would turn into two, then three, and finally forever. Fast forward to sophomore year and I think I have improved drastically since the first time I touched a soccer ball. Throughout these years of hard work and dedication I have realized that in order to achieve something, you need to relentlessly chase after it. You only live life once and that is why giving up is not an option.

The process is long. I scored my first professional goal 3 years after I started. The only reason why that happened is because I never gave up on my dream. I think soccer improved my character because it provided me with a goal and a purpose. Therefore, I love soccer and I think it is essential to me.

  1. Hi Sai! It is great knowing that you always had passion for a sport like soccer. I am always interested in sports and I watch a lot of sports, but I am not the type of person that would be great at every sport that I have watched. I like soccer, but I’m a big fan of Modric and Madrid. I like how you structured your blog very logical and easy to read. I also like how you integrated your blog with your broader identity topic of being resilient and not giving up on something easily. I have no doubt that you have earned much from soccer; it is impressive that you continued your dedication to soccer for 3 years even though you have not seen any super apparent rewards. I don’t think that I am the type of person that you give up on something very easily, but I am the type of person that spends a lot of time picking and choosing what should start working on. Maybe we could hear something about that in later blogs? It is great reading about how your Soccer Career is influential to your identity and I wish to read more great blogs like this next week!

  2. Hello Sai, I'd like to congratulate you on your efforts. Sports is a very difficult physical activity to master, and the story you've just presented is a prime example of what it takes to learn it. The concept of a "dream" you present, as something to be attained with great trial and effort, is truly inspiring for many who face struggles with their own dreams. Your story stands as a reminder that if we work hard, we can achieve our own dreams. Honestly, your inspiration is common: I gained an interest in playing video games or hiking only after I saw the benefits and the fun that could be had, before that there was no such interest. I especially like how you tie your hobby to your identity, as it is a unique aspect of you that signals who you are as a person. Slacking off and procrastination is a road I am sure we have all been down; putting it off just makes it harder to get. I am glad you were able to push forward with this regardless. Your temerity and bravery are truly awesome and worthy of praise, so I commend you for the hard work you have performed. My one question is this: how did you choose your title? I want to know what deeper meaning it has, and what "food critic" has to do with your blog, although I may have missed it myself. Once again, congratulations on your resilience in the face of adversity and procrastination. You are truly a shining example of what people can do if they persevere to reach their goals.

  3. Hi Sai!! I love the message of the blog. I know people say 'don't give up' all the time but there is a reason it comes up so much, and your blog is the perfect example why. I, personally, do NOT enjoy sports but it is so nice to see someone so passionate about something they love. It is amazing how you never gave up, unfortunately I do give up a little too quickly. So, I will take your advise to heart. I am also curious about your title choice, like Varian, I also must have missed it. Is it because you play with the consistency of eating three meals a day? Congrats on your first professional goal! And have a great day!

  4. Sai, your passion for your selected sport is admirable, and your long-term commitment to the sport proves your dedication. As I have been running cross-country for about five years now, I realize that your commitment to soccer has probably been difficult and tremulous.
Your dreams are important. Many people have told me that I have unrealistic goals and dreams, which made it all the more satisfying to prove them wrong. I think that you have at least a baseline understanding of the expertise required in order to succeed as a professional soccer player, and the problems that you aren’t aware of will probably prove more fun to solve later!
Your ending statement is simple, but powerful. Thank you for being willing to share your dreams with the rest of us and put yourself out into both the world and our blogging cohort.

  5. Hi Sai! I’ve never heard of anyone having the dream of becoming a pro soccer player! That is really cool and hopefully you can accomplish that on top of you being part of the air force. I used to play soccer a lot too, but I had to quit because I wasn’t very good. Going pro is pretty difficult, and I admire the fact that you did not give up at all when I know that other people probably have given up already because they thought this dream was impossible. When you go pro and win the World Cup, don’t forget about your day 1 blogging cohort who supported and believed in you ♥. I love that you described the first time you seriously fell in love with soccer, by watching Mbappe. ️He truly is such a good player, and I think that it is beautiful because current players are influencing the next generation of players. I hope that you continue to improve your soccer skills. You will probably be even more amazed in college when you realize how far you’ve come. Actually, when you finally go pro you will truly realize that. I like that you straight up admitted the process is long, but you will not give up. I respect your efforts so much! Good luck going pro Sai.
