Qinwei Wu: Week 2- I Love Music!

I think that music is a beautiful art form, capable of connecting people from across the world as they enjoy the same music, but with different feelings, interpretations, and experiences. It is so incredible that humans have invented so many ways to create music. Somehow, a collection of sounds turns into music and becomes something that so many people, including myself, love.

I listen to music every day and I think that music is a big part of who I am. I have so many posters of artists hung up on my wall (I want my entire wall to be covered with them!!), a growing vinyl collection (unfortunately vinyls are very expensive), and Spotify Premium (you probably don’t have Premium haha) so I can enjoy music without ads. I listen to many different artists, but my favorite is Lana Del Rey. She uses her life experiences to craft her songs and express herself. Her sound is a beautiful blend of melancholy, romance, old Hollywood glamour, and 1950s-1970s Americana pop and jazz. My favorite album of hers is Blue Banisters.

My second favorite artist is The Neighbourhood. I am going to their concert next month in San Francisco, which I am super excited about. I bought the tickets eight months ago, and I am super happy that there is only one month left until the concert. They are an alternative rock band, and even though sometimes their lyrics do not make sense, their sound is very atmospheric, and a lot of their songs are catchy and nice to sing along to.

I also really like Faye Wong, a Chinese pop star who was popular in the 1990s. The only reason I got into her music was because my mom always sang her songs during karaoke. Her songs are very reflective of the era, when ballads were everywhere. She also did a lot of covers of English songs in Chinese like “Rilkean Heart” by Cocteau Twins. It was funny because I recognized Faye Wong’s tune when I first listened to “Rilkean Heart”, and I found out that she had made a cover of it in Chinese.

Listening to music is one of the ways I express myself. The music that I choose to play reflects my mood, but it also reflects my experiences. Music is such an important part of identity because everybody interprets it differently. Our cultures, personalities, and memories all intertwine to create our own interpretation of music, therefore determining our music taste. My mom might listen to Faye Wong, and think about her childhood, back when she anticipated Faye Wong’s new albums, while I listen to Faye Wong and think about people from the 1990s and their impeccable fashion.

  1. Hi, Qinwei, it is nice to see that you have written about your favorite artists for this blog. It’s great knowing music is a way to express yourself. I could not imagine myself working on assignments without music around me. I totally agree with you on the topic that music reflects a person’s personality because everyone interprets it differently. I think that music is able to be loved by anyone and represent one’s personality because it is diverse and manifold; people could easily find a genre that they like to listen out of all the genres that exist in music. I like that the blog keeps a clean logical structure by listing the artists that you like and expanding onto why you liked them; it is very intuitive and interesting. I also like that you utilize a vivid personal example to support your argument that different people perceive music differently. This is a great blog and I wish to hear and read more blogs like this next week!

  2. I completely agree with you that music is a beautiful and unique art form. Your observation that it is a powerful way to express yourself and emotion is appreciated, both by the composer and the listener. In particular, I think that your ability to express different aspects of yourself through music is admirable, and I agree that showing several different aspects of your character is important and valuable. After all, if music can be varied as the vast numbers of people that create it, then why can’t it be combined to make something new? And your combination of describing different artists creates a new perspective of you, one that combines the appeal of these artists to you on the page. Thank you for providing a detailed perspective of your tastes and preferences, as it will help us see you in the future.

  3. Hi Qinwei. This is such an interesting article and I really like the way you organize your work; I saw that you dedicated 1 artist to each of your paragraphs and went in depth about each one. Your response is very detailed and I personally love that! I totally agree about the fact that music can connect people all over the world because it is a common hobby. Its something that everyone can express without the fear of discrimination. Music in my opinion, improves mood and is something that is absoloutly essential for wellbeing. A lot of people say that there is no meaning to music, but like you said, each song is handcrafted with intent and stories that are expressed by the artist. Music is also very diverse and I think that each culture has a different and unique aspect to their music. I think writing music on the other hand is also very important because it allows others to express their feelings. This connects back to how each song has a deeper meaning and story. Not only that, the actual sound of the music has a different mood that reflects the intent of the author. Personally, I also really like the neighborhood because its very catchy and atmospheric. I love this blog post!
